organizations such as the Richmond Marine Rescue Society which continues to
enhance public safety," said Ilich, MLA for Richmond Centre.
"The money will be used for programs and services that strengthen emergency
response and preparedness," said Reid, MLA for Richmond East. "I am pleased
this local rescue society can continue its valuable work and enhance the
safety of our community."
"The RMRS is involved in many search and rescue activities in the Lower
Mainland, and plays a vital role in the community's water safety," said Yap,
MLA for Richmond-Steveston. "Support of this organization to respond more
effectively is vital to our residents."
Richmond Marine Rescue Society is a non-profit, charitable organization,
whose sole focus is to support Unit 10, Richmond of the Canadian Coast Guard
Auxiliary. The Society provides the financial and operational support for
the search and rescue vessel, Auxiliary 7, and her crew. Auxiliary 7 is
a rigid hull inflatable (RHIB), fast response vessel based out of Steveston
on the Fraser River. Unit 10 provides 24 hour 7 days a week Marine Search
and Rescue services in the Strait of Georgia and from the mouth of the
Fraser River to the Pitt River Bridge.
"The Richmond Marine Rescue Society appreciates this financial support from
the province to help us ensure that Unit 10 and her crew is appropriately
trained and equipped to respond effectively on short notice to save lives on
the water." said society President Blake Williams. "It will also help us
strategically improve our search and rescue services for the future."
The $40,000 Direct Access Grant received from the Province will ensure that
RMRS continues to support the objectives of the CCGA-P Mission to:
* Save 100% of lives at risk
* Reduce the number and severity of search and rescue incidents
* Promote marine safety
* Support the Canadian Coast Guard
* Provide a humanitarian service
* Maintain the highest professional standards
* Promote dedication and pride of membership
The funds this year will be used to upgrade and replace aging and worn
vessel electronics (radar and GPS), crew gear and equipment, fund crew
"simulator" training, and cover the costs for the ongoing administration of
the Unit and Society.
