Province Gives Grant to Richmond Marine Rescue Society

RICHMOND - The Richmond Marine Rescue Society (RMRS) has received $35,000 in community gaming grants from the provincial government.

"The Province is committed to providing financial support to volunteer-based organizations such as the Richmond Marine Rescue Society," says Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap. "Through such funding we continue to strengthen emergency response and preparedness and to enhance public safety."

The Direct Access Grant will ensure that RMRS continues to support the
following objectives of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary:
* Support the Canadian Coast Guard.
* Save 100 per cent of lives at risk .
* Reduce the number and seriousness of search and rescue incidents.
* Promote marine safety.
* Provide a humanitarian service.
* Maintain the highest professional standards.
* Promote dedication and pride of membership.

Richmond Marine Rescue Society is a non-profit, charitable organization, whose sole focus is to support the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Station 10.  The Society provides the financial and operational support for the search and rescue vessel, Auxiliary 7, and her crew.  Auxiliary 7 is a rigid hull inflatable fast-response vessel based out of Steveston on the Fraser River. Station 10 provides around-the-clock Marine Search and Rescue services in the Strait of Georgia and from the mouth of the Fraser River to the Pitt River Bridge.

"The Richmond Marine Rescue Society appreciates this financial support from the province to help our Board of Directors ensure that Station 10 and her crew of community volunteers is appropriately trained and equipped to respond effectively on short notice to save lives and property on the water," says Society President Blake Williams. "It will also help us advance our five-year strategic plan to improve our search and rescue services for the future."
