Dear Community Member:
The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Unit 10 - Richmond, is a volunteer Marine Search and Rescue organization. We operate two vessels, Auxiliary 6 based by the Speed Skating Oval on the Middle Arm and Auxiliary 7 based in Steveston on the Main Arm. Our Search and Rescue members respond to calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As a member of the Canadian Government Search and Rescue system, we receive an hourly rate for fuel and insurance when responding to calls. However, all the remaining expenses are paid for through fundraising and donations.
In 2010, Unit 10 has responded to 59 calls (and counting), covering almost 200 nautical miles, requiring over 94 vessel hours and 362 person hours. These missions have resulted in 4 people saved, 44 people assisted, and over $450,000 in property assisted and saved. Calls range from breakdowns, collisions, capsized vessels, people in the water, to attempted suicides and groundings. In addition, we maintain an extensive training schedule including 63 exercises requiring 143 vessel hours and 303 person hours. Training is a necessary and valuable part of our organization as it ensures that we are capable to safely assist anyone in need of rescue.
Besides Search and Rescue activities, we participate extensively in boating safety education and community events. In the past year we have participated in the Steveston Salmon Festival Parade, Richmond Maritime Festival, Jimmy Ng Memorial Street Hockey Tournament, HSBC Celebration of Light patrols, Richmond Safety Community Day, and other events.
Community support is essential to maintain our Marine Search and Rescue capacity. Any donation would be greatly appreciated and would be used to further our efforts. Donations are tax deductible and can be made out to either the Richmond Marine Rescue Society or the Strait of Georgia Marine Rescue Society.
